Fides Becker (b. 1962) lures us into a world of dreams in which princesses seem to stroll through pleasure palaces and spacious park meadows. Becker uses her knowledge of art history and masterful technique to construct illusory realities, yet her goal is not to create a superficial magical world. Upon closer scrutiny, the scenes which seem to happen by chance are revealed to be carefully composed arrangements. The artist further deconstructs the enchanting realism of her works by juxtaposing printed fabrics with painted canvas and dissecting the space with sewing machine stitching. This book provides a succinct overview of her new phase of creativity – many of the works come straight from the artist’s studio and are published here for the first time.
