Author’s description:
With this series of Notebooks, I wish to trace the evolution of Matta’s intuitions and concerns into the signs and symbols of the world of his imagination. To grasp the development of his idea “that reality can only be represented in a state of perpetual transformation”. To relate through notes and images the story of his own “growth”, and his perception of the world.
It is very difficult to confront an artist with his memory, because this disrupts the mechanism of forgetting, which makes us free in our daily lives. Hence it was very hard for me to upset his state of openness to surprise, which is an essential condition for poetic action. To maintain a balance without disturbing his privacy required an enormous effort.
I give you here all I could retrieve from his submerged past. Matta never re-reads his own writings, never looks too hard at his own paintings which, newly finished, he turns to the wall, and then steps out for a walk into life, asking himself other questions. Matta is a perennial, ever-renewed spring, and you can never bathe twice in the same Matta.
